Background of the Study

Pain management is a critical aspect of healthcare for geriatric patients, especially those who suffer from chronic illnesses such as arthritis, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative conditions. However, effective pain management for elderly patients in Kogi State healthcare facilities is often compromised by various barriers, including limited resources, insufficient staff training, and cultural misconceptions about pain in older adults.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes that older adults experience pain at higher rates than other age groups, yet they are less likely to receive adequate treatment. Pain in geriatric patients often goes under-recognized, under-reported, and undertreated, leading to decreased quality of life and exacerbation of health conditions. Research highlights that in many low-resource settings, including Nigeria, healthcare professionals, including nurses and physicians, may lack the appropriate tools and knowledge to manage pain effectively in elderly patients (Olamide & Durojaiye, 2023). This study seeks to explore the barriers to effective pain management in Kogi State healthcare facilities and evaluate potential solutions to improve pain care for elderly patients.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the high prevalence of pain among elderly individuals, pain management remains suboptimal in healthcare facilities in Kogi State. The barriers to effective pain management include inadequate staff training, limited access to pain-relieving medications, and the underestimation of pain in older adults. This study aims to identify the barriers preventing effective pain management in geriatric patients and propose interventions to enhance pain care in Kogi State healthcare facilities.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify the barriers to effective pain management for geriatric patients in Kogi State healthcare facilities.

  2. To evaluate the impact of these barriers on the quality of life of elderly patients.

  3. To recommend strategies for improving pain management for elderly patients in Kogi State healthcare facilities.

Research Questions

  1. What are the primary barriers to effective pain management for geriatric patients in Kogi State healthcare facilities?

  2. How do these barriers affect the quality of life of elderly patients in these healthcare facilities?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to overcome the barriers to effective pain management for elderly patients in Kogi State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Limited staff training and knowledge significantly hinder effective pain management in geriatric patients in Kogi State healthcare facilities.

  2. The lack of appropriate pain management leads to a reduced quality of life for elderly patients in Kogi State healthcare facilities.

  3. Training healthcare staff and improving access to pain management resources will enhance pain care for geriatric patients in Kogi State healthcare facilities.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on healthcare facilities in Kogi State, specifically examining pain management for geriatric patients. Limitations may include the difficulty in obtaining accurate data on pain management practices due to inconsistencies in record-keeping and the subjective nature of pain reporting.

Definitions of Terms

  • Pain Management: The process of preventing, alleviating, or eliminating pain, often involving medication, therapy, or lifestyle adjustments.

  • Geriatric Patients: Elderly individuals, typically those aged 65 and older, who may require specialized care due to age-related health conditions.

  • Barriers to Pain Management: Factors that prevent effective pain treatment, including lack of resources, inadequate staff training, cultural attitudes, and inadequate pain assessment.
